Iconology of two icons "virigin mary" work fouquet and parmigianino

iconology is one the methods to study art work which is done in three levels of description, analysis and interpretation to identify the inner layers and explore the meaning of the work. In this research we study Virgin Mary and the Child by Fouquet and Parmigianino, employing Panofsky’s method of iconography that is Based on descriptive-analytical method and relying on library sources. Considering the definite principles regulated during the Byzantine era for the depiction of Virgin Mary and the Child, both artist have violated those principles in order to create their own works. The target of this thesis is to survey social and political reasons effecting the way the artists depicted the clothing of Virgin Mary, in order to indicate the significant role clothing maintains in the artworks from aesthetic and sociological point of view. the research shows that the two works both employ institutionalized principles to depict Saint Mary. Some of these principles are: compatibility of portraits with the people of painter’s time, outfit as the key to understand iconographies, domination of political discourses on painter’s viewpoint, and following the style of the painter’s time.
