Abstract
Burckhart, in his book namely Islamic art, is of the opinion that nascent Islam did not know art and could not recognize it. For this claim, he argues that ambience that Islam appeared in it, was nomadic or semi-nomadic. According to this argument, although Arabs had relationship with other civilizations, but they were partial to jewelry, clothing and weapons. Now, the main question of the research is about truth of this argument. In other words, Did the ambience cause that Islam take the position in this way? The aims of this essay consist in recognizing of the criterions of Burckhardt about nomadic and sedentary life, exact understanding of position of the Mecca and Medina society in the age of emergence, and to know the correctness or incorrectness of Burckhardt's argument. The Findings of this research indicate that Burckhardt's argument is vulnerable in some ways, such as the fact that the early audiences of Islam were not purely nomadic or semi-nomadic, and according to Burckhardt's criterion about nomadism, the argument is more particular to the claim. The research is conducted based on library sources, using descriptive-analytical method.
