Abstract
Various theories of religious art or Islamic art have led to different conceptualizations of Islamic art. Regarding sacred art and Islamic art, conceptualizations have been put forward by Burckhardt and his followers, as well as by Grabar and his counterparts, in the last century. In the traditionalist theory, attributed to Burckhardt, the spiritual and sacred component is emphasized, while in the historicist theory, attributed to Grabar, the breadth of civilizational history is taken into account. The third theory—which, in comparison to the others, reveals its effectiveness and universality—is the theory of the ideal art of Farabi's virtuous city, or virtuous art (al-fann al-fāḍil). The theory of virtuous art does not conflict with the views of the traditionalists, nor does it necessarily negate their examples, while at the same time covering a much broader range of instances. Burckhardt's theory narrows the scope of Islamic art and architecture and is unable to explain many examples. The civilizational-historical breadth of Grabar's theory goes so far as to introduce instances as "Islamic art" that are clearly in contradiction with Islamic teachings and practices. The theory of Farabi's virtuous art is free from both of these shortcomings.
