A study of Dr. Shafī'ī-Kadkanī's perspective on Sanā'ī's spiritual transformation and a critique of the historical and sudden approach regarding Sanā'ī's evolution.

Abstract
Sanā'ī, a poet of the late fifth and early sixth centuries AH, represents a turning point in mystical Persian poetry, having been able to adorn a process of reflecting earlier prose mystical concepts within poetic forms such as ghazal, qaṣīdah, and masnavī. With regard to the available sources on Sanā'ī, we encounter two perspectives on his character. One view considers Sanā'ī's personality in a chronological and linear fashion, regards his turn toward composing poetry with mystical themes as sudden, and attempts to reflect this process in his poems and works as well. Another view does not see his personal transformation as abrupt but rather views these developments alongside the ups and downs of his character, maintaining that even at the end of his life, Sanā'ī exhibited lapses and linguistic slippages in his poetry—such as satire and bawdy verse. In light of Dr. Shafī'ī-Kadkanī's perspective, which aligns with the second view, this research employs a descriptive-analytical method to scrutinize the various dimensions of Sanā'ī's spiritual revolution, and concurrently to examine whether Sanā'ī, as Shafī'ī-Kadkanī suggests, possessed multiple and at times divergent personalities. The results of this research indicate a gradual progression in Sanā'ī's career and his movement toward poetic perfection.
