Abstract
One of the important issues in the domain of the "philosophy of architecture" is the nature and essence of meaning and the processes related to it in architectural works. This research addresses the main question of what the effective components are in the process of reading and interpreting the meaning of an architectural work, and whether, based on these components, one can affirm the determinacy of meaning in architectural works or not. To explain the answer to this question, through a comparative analysis of various theories and then their critique and evaluation, and by employing the method of qualitative content analysis and drawing upon Islamic teachings, it becomes clear that although certain considerations such as the prior knowledge and presuppositions of the audience do affect the interpretation and reading of the work's meaning, nevertheless, based on the overall outcome of all the components affecting meaning—including the architect, the audience, the work, and the context—the semantic domain of the text/architecture is determinate and relatively closed; a domain whose limits, quality, and model of access are explained within the theory presented in this article.
