Abstract
Chaharbagh is a landscape and architectural style that, in light of the religio-epistemic perspective of Iranian Muslims during the Safavid era, reaches maturity and an exemplary manifestation. Chaharbagh, in connection with the concept of the four paradises mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, the narrations and practice (sīrah) of the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them), and the special attention given to the Islamic tradition and the esteemed institution of endowment (waqf) during the Safavid period, serves as a mirror reflecting Islamic architecture. Careful examination of these sources, as well as the literary, philosophical (ḥikmah), and mystical world of that period, reveals that the spiritual and sapiential subtleties of the Qur'anic concept of paradise in the Safavid era are beautifully intertwined with the notion of Chaharbagh within the context of Shia traditions. As a result of this sacred bond, the Chaharbagh of the Safavid period becomes a comprehensive mirror of the epistemic design and paradisiacal expression of the art of the Isfahan School—an Isfahan that, by virtue of its beautiful and paradise-like Chaharbaghs, transforms into a memorable garden-city. The present research, employing an analytical-descriptive approach and a library-based method, examines the architecture of the Chaharbagh style during the Safavid era. By investigating the Qur'anic verses and traditions, as well as other sapiential, epistemic, religious, and literary sources, this study observes and explores the religio-epistemic subtleties of the Chaharbagh in the Safavid period.
