Abstract
One of the important applications proposed for music is music therapy—that is, the use of this art in securing and improving physical and mental health. The present article, focusing on this issue, after examining the subject-matter and explaining the ruling on music in its primary state, investigates the ruling on ghina' (singing/music) when used for the treatment of patients. The view adopted in this article is the permissibility of treatment with all types of music, including ghina', but only in cases of necessity (iḍṭirār)—such that the patient's treatment genuinely depends upon it, although there are doubts regarding the verification of this point (i.e., the real and exclusive effectiveness of ghina' in treatment). In this article, to explain and strengthen this view, arguments have been organized, and an effort has been made, through fair critique and examination, to clarify the scope of acceptability and acceptance of this theory.
