Abstract
Iconography, as a sacred art, has been a visual representation of spirituality and the divine aspect of sacred figures in religious arts. The nature of iconography is determined by its apophatic (tanzīhī) or cataphatic (tashbīhī) structure. Since, in the historical trajectory of Western art, a new form of depicting sacred figures emerged based on a cataphatic approach that diminished their sanctity, this article aims to conduct a comparative study of the icon of Saint Mary (PBUH) from the perspective of both the apophatic and cataphatic approaches in Christian and Islamic art. The icon of Saint Mary was chosen as the subject of study due to its significance and abundance in Christian art, as well as the limitations of miniature painting in depicting other holy women. The samples were selected purposefully, and the method of content analysis is descriptive and semiotic. The results of the research indicate that a change in the artist's ontological perspective leads to the adoption of either of these two approaches and consequently alters the nature of iconography as a religious art.
