Abstract
Erwin Panofsky is one of the prominent scholars of the twentieth century in the field of medieval studies. His book Abbot Suger and the Church of Saint-Denis is among his most important works on Gothic art, architecture, and philosophy. Panofsky's extensive research, conducted through the methods of Symbolism and Iconography, brought significant advances in the examination and interpretation of images and opened new horizons for art historians. Panofsky's approach, however, also faced criticism. One of the most important critiques of his method is that it is "ideography" rather than "historiography," particularly regarding the ambiguous character of Abbot Suger and his influence on the Church of Saint-Denis, which has raised doubts among medievalists. In his works, Panofsky attempts to present Suger as a Gothic architect, in the guise of a theologian/philosopher or a master builder, as the author and interpreter of a set of philosophical ideas of that era (the School of Saint-Victor, the School of Chartres, and the Boethian heritage along with Augustinian-Dionysian thought), thereby constructing a philosophical system for Suger. A second criticism of Panofsky's interpretive method is that it undermines the independence of the image; the image upon which Panofsky performs iconography is typically laden with a multitude of theological and mythological texts, as if the image were not understandable without them.
